are you back talking me boy?! ray's voice boomed throughout the trailer as he shook a young ellis back and forth by his shirt violently. "n-n-no sir, honest i wasn't.." ellis shrank back as far as he could, which wasn't very far seeing as his dad had him by his shirt. this wasn't anything new, it seemed like everyday ellis did something to piss his old man off to the point where he was spitting blood or sporting some kind of bruise. yes, he knew at some point it would happen but he would never be use to it. he would never understand why his dad got so upset with him and why he felt the need to torture him when he didn't want to do what the man wanted. you listen to me you little shit, i own you! you do what i say, when i say it! and if i say you gotta start pulling your got damn 'round here, all you better say to me is yes sir ellis was sure that he would be feeling this tomorrow. he was actually a little surprised that his neck hadn't snapped or better yet that he hadn't been tasting blood yet. this whole situation started because ellis was told that he wouldn't be going back to school, that he would be staying home and learning the family business. cooking meth. "but i don't w- .." he was cut off by a sharp pain stinging his cheek as he hit the floor. without so much as another word, ellis felt himself being grabbed by the collar of his shirt and drug backwards towards the one place he feared the most. ellis begged and pleaded that his father give him another chance, he didn't want to go to the closet. he kicked against the ground and shouted for his mom's help but wasn't surprised that she just sat there on the couch as if this wasn't happening. sarah had tried to step in before but the only thing it did was make it worse and had gotten her a few bruises herself. they were both in the same boat here, the only difference is that sarah had learned how to deal. how to survive. ellis still had the child impulses to say the right thing at the wrong time - the wrong time being all day, every day. in a swift motion he was tossed into the closet, his back as well as his head collided with the wall roughly. by the time he regained his senses and was crawling towards the exit, the door was slammed in his face and the sound of the lock twisting made his heart drop. "NOOOO! NO! PLEASE DAD, OPEN THE DOOR. DON'T LEAVE ME IN HERE!" he shouted, his tiny fists banging against the door as loudly as they could. --- ellis sat up with a shout as he glanced around his surroundings, he wasn't in a closet - he was in his room. another day, another memory flooding back. sweat dripped down his face as he tried to calm himself down by trying to steady his breathing. he pulled the sheets back and bit into a big piece of courage before he glanced down at himself and bit back a stream of obscenities as he snapped the sheet off the bed. talk about humiliation at it's finest. ellis wished that he could say this was a first time experience but it wasn't. the male figured his body jolted awake to stop it from happening but apparently it was for other reasons that he didn't have the slightest clue on how to figure out. to shame himself maybe? right before he woke up, the dream would have continued with him shouting to be let out some more. the television's volume would rise because his mother can't stand to hear her son so helpless and being that he was afraid of the dark and scared to death - he's urinate on himself. which would cause for another scolding from his massive father because he would be disgusted and embarrassed. the memory of that sent a chill down his spine as he wiped the cold sweat from his forehead. he stood up from his bed and removed his boxers to go shower up, judging by the time that read on the clock - he might as well get up and head down to work. ellis never went back to school after that day. he stayed home and did what he was told, he began taking care of his family. he did so for a few years before he ran away from home...he didn't stay gone long before his mother found him and told him about the trials that she and his father faced. the man squandered the little money they did earn away on booze and gambling. the two of them had convinced him that without him they wouldn't survive. which didn't take that long to do seeing as they were the only source of love he had ever had. no. if ellis could be honest with himself, he was doing this for one person and one person only. his mother. ellis didn't have the heart to make her suffer for ray's actions. he attempted to get her away from the asshole but she loved him and ellis couldn't fault her for that. you can't help who you fall for, right? besides, it wasn't like he could do anything else at this point. he never made it past the second grade, he couldn't read and he barely knew how to write. large portions of his life were spent in and out of juvenile detention centers and prison, when he was of age. the few friends he had were fellow drug dealers and other people who didn't even exist to the outside world. the place he saw on television when everyone was someone of importance, who could walk around with their heads held high and a smile so bright that it challenged the sun's brightness. he would never have that smile. he would never be a somebody. he was the kid that stood in the background behind everyone. ellis was a follower, not a leader. he did what people told him to do. the only thing he had any true knowledge of was surviving. stealing and cooking were the only two things that he ever excelled at - the only two things that he shined at. doing what his father wanted him to do so he wouldn't have to get hit or locked in a closet. ellis stood under the shower head, his head lowered and eyes closed as the extremely cold water washed over him. "just a worthless piece of shit.." he muttered to himself. |
