DON'T KNOW WHAT'S DOWN THIS ROAD, I'M JUST WALKING TRYING TO SEE THROUGH THE RAIN

wow, are you my ...i completely lost track of time! well please sit sit, let me just move this stuff out of the way. okay, let's get started. tell me a little bit about yourself. she was lost. there was no way around it. leave it to her to get lost when she was getting interviewed for a job. was it a job? kenzie couldn't exactly remember as she stared at the different hallways, at least she was in the right building this time. she was just about to flip a coin when someone came to her rescue and pointed her in the direction she needed to go. after thanking them for what seemed like a million times, she ran towards the end of the hall before stopping short just before entering the door fully. "sorry, sorry i'm late. i got a bit turned around in here," she exclaimed around the same time the interviewer spoke up. she shook her head, her blonde curls dancing around her face as she begun to explain but stopped when she was instructed to sit come in and sit down. which she did, placing her hands in her lap nervously - her fingers fiddling with one another as she watched the interviewer move a few things around. "uhh, okay. my name's mackenzie. actually, mackenzie lynn mcdowell..mmm" she trailed off, her mouth scrunching to the side as she tried to think of a few other things to say. "i'm seventeen years old and a senior in high school, super exciting for to be honest." she nodded with a cheeky smirk. yep, she was more than excited about graduating this year, not because she hated school but because it was going to be the start of another new chapter in her life. "oh, oh, oh! i'm a babysitter" she she said excitedly, her index finger pointing at the interviewer - throwing in a small giggle afterwards. perhaprs it wasn't that interesting to know but it was something that was a big part of her day to day life. that's a lot of information. so tell me, where are you from? she was used to hearing that. mackenzie had a habit of going on and on about any and everything, even when she felt that she never truly said enough or even what was asked of her. "originally i'm from lancaster, that's in pennsylvania and um.." she said, stopping abruptly to nod her head a little. it wasn't that she didn't want to dive into that conversation - it was just a little too soon for her if she were honest. "but i love new york, it's great!" she added with a quick grin before averting her eyes to towards the floor. her hand shot up to push her glasses further up on the bridge of her nose, biting her lip as she mustered up whatever strength she had hiding away in her tiny frame to look up again.ahh fascinating ! well i'm from here, born and raised, never left. so many people that i know and love here, just couldn't leave them ! what about you? anyone you care dearly for here? it must have been nice to live here you're entire life, at least that's what she thought to herself as she nodded her head, a smile on her lips. "that's awesome...really. i'm slightly jealous," new york was full of life and there was always something new to see. her tongue ran over her bottom lip coolly, of course there were people here that she cared about dearly. she cared for everyone that she came into contact with. it was possibly the most naive thing about her, to put so much faith into people but she couldn't help it. "yeah, quite a few people actually. firstly, my uncle ezra who is..my uncle." she snorted, covering her mouth quickly afterwards as she laughed. yeah, she was a real dork. "he's my mother's brother who took me in when things...didn't exactly...work out for me back in lancaster." she nodded. he was her savior no doubt and she owed him everything. which was why she did he very best to impress him with any and everything that she did. she had to show her appreciation in everything, like her grades and the extra-curricular activities that she participated in at school. she didn't want a repeat of lancaster, that much was for sure. "he's like a father to me, even if we have those awkward days but we're getting through them. i call him papa ezra from time to time.." she shrugged, acting as if it were no big deal. she cared for her aunt just as much but if she were being honest, the only relationship - parent wise - that she focused on was the one with her uncle. nothing personal..just, yeah. as another person flashed across her mind, she seemed to shy up - a crimson color washing over her cheeks as her shoulders rose up towards her ears. "ummm, then there's todd.." her teeth clutching down on her bottom lip lightly. that was something else that she could delve into a little later. "he's my boyfriend," she spat out rather quickly. there were her other friends of course, but she honestly couldn't sit here and rattle them off. they didn't have that kind of time.quite a list. must mean you have a juicy past, let's hear a little bit about it. it is here that she tenses up completely. not in the cute, shy way one would when they were talking about a crush but in a way that made it apparent that she didn't want to talk about it. "i wouldn't say it was juicy...i mean.." she mumbled, pushing her glasses up once again before she dropped her head down to stare at her hands. all at once, memories of her past came flooding back to her and she was back in lancaster surrounded by her rather large family. two older brothers, one older sister and the younger sisters. being smack-dabbed in the middle, one would think that all eyes wouldn't be on her, that she would some how get lost in the sea of children but that wasn't the case. she was noticed. more often than not because she questioned everything. she was curious about everything. she didn't think that it was a bad thing but given their world - it wasn't welcomed. at all. what was written was law and it wasn't supposed to be question. she would often ignore the warnings from her older siblings and speak out of turn which would end with her having a very sore bottom of a stinging pain across her face. no matter the punishment, tears would hotly prick her eyes and she would run to the comfort of her older brother, her eldest brother - jeremiah. "it was a simple life honestly.." wrong. sure, it may have been simple in terms of how they lived than the english did but it seemed to be more rules than anything. more rules to follow and when they weren't you were treated quite horribly.it was one thing to be viewed differently by your peers but it seemed to be twenty times worse when you were the bishop's daughter. the one daughter that yet had anyone want to court her because unlike her sister, she'd much rather be out getting lost in the corn fields instead of participating in things that most girl's her age were doing. she didn't want to join a knitting club, nor did she want to sit around and learn to cook and do everything else that a young wife was expected to do. "i grew up in pennsylvania, a small community...and it was..i mean it was.." she stammered. again, the memories came flooding back and she winced a little - shifting uncomfortably in her seat. mackenzie liked to believe that her downfall began the day she went to the market with her older brothers and had what she liked to call her first english world experience. we're just here for what's on the list they said. don't go running off they said. well, being mackenzie she was never one to do as she was told unless she was forced to. while they were conversing with the clerk, she somehow found herself standing in front of the magazine rack - eyes wide and bouncing from all of the different covers. it was shocking. it was foreign. there was a part of her brain, somewhere deep inside that was flashing a huge red light - telling her that this was dangerous grounds. that this had the serious potential to spiral out of control and spiral out of control at lightning speed. it didn't stop her though. nor did it stop her from picking up a few and glancing through the inside, staring at the various pictures and reading the small blurbs. it was then that her spark and curiosity expanded beyond belief and she did the unthinkable. with the little money that she had she was able to buy two magazines, one that seemed to filled with nothing but fashion. vogue it was called. the women were all so pretty, some covered from head to toe while others were barely covered at all surrounded by men who were just as much uncovered - if not more. then there was one filled with a bunch of people her age. "as normal as an amish life could be." she finished, nodding her head firmly. she lifted her gaze to the interviewer, offering a quick smile before dropping it. this was no doubt the one time where she wouldn't be sporting her usual grin. it was topic she would much rather forget. this was her home now. this was her life and even though it hurt thinking about the fact that she wouldn't see her siblings or her mother again, she had the handful of people here who cared for her. she rushed back to her thoughts, thinking about the many times she would beg to go to the store with er siblings just to purchase another magazine or two. it was there that she met him. something, or someone rather, that would send her down a road leading to her excommunication. his name was kyle. he was seventeen, two years older than her and everything that she had read about. gorgeous and nice with a hint of mystery to him. he put all of the other boys that wanted her attention back home to shame and she had to admit that she was head over heels the moment she saw him. what turned into simple small talk at the store, turned into her sneaking off throughout the day and sometimes at night to spend time with him and his friends. they were all so nice. he was nice. he was her first kiss it was so perfect - she just had to tell someone. big mistake. thomasina was always trying to one up mackenzie. the red head never did like the fact that matthew was interested in her when kenzie could care less about him. he was the spitting image of her father and she didn't particularly care for her father. terrible to say and she often prayed to god that he would forgive her for having such feelings. one shouldn't have felt that way towards anyone, especially the person who helped bring them into the world. it was a day that she was forced to sit in bible study with the other girl's her age, instead of reciting verses they were discussing who had done what and with who. what started out as playful gossip turned into mackenzie and thomasina going back and forth with one another and even though it wasn't true the blonde blurted out that she went all the way with kyle. that she was a woman now. big. fat. lie. she wasn't sure who told her parents, or how it got out but it did and spread like wild fire. "i'm happy here though. it's a great place.." her mother was disappointed and her father was filled with rage and ashamed. had it not been for her brother, she was sure that her father would have knocked her senseless. it seemed that it didn't take long for him to make his decision. shunned. banished from his home and no longer welcomed in the town of the lord. she had purchased a first class ticket to hell and he didn't want her a part of his family anymore. mackenzie begged and pleaded that he hear her out, to forgive her of her mistakes. sure, she didn't care for him but that didn't mean she wanted to be ripped away from everything that she had known and loved like that. her younger sisters were the first things that crossed her mind, what would they do without her? she hadn't seen them for days and when it was time for her to leave, the only people she got a chance to say goodbye to where her brothers who were working out in the field. it was quick and hushed and it hurt her to her core. her mother was quickly afterwards, shoving a small piece of paper into her hands before she hurried away when her father came to stand on the porch. mackenzie didn't look at the paper until she was dropped off a few miles outside of town. it was a name and a phone number for a man named ezra. underneath it, scribbled with what seemed like haste were the words my brother. her uncle. there was an uncle she didn't know about? as strange as it was, he was her only hope. her chance of actually finding a place and someone who truly wanted her. she made her way into town and after asking for directions found the police station where she could call this ezra. first and one of the best decisions that she ever made in her life. "and that's all..really. i mean..i don't know what else you want me to say," you just get more and more interesting. is that a word that someone would describe you as? no? then what is something that people would say you are. she smiled a little, happy that she wasn't pressed to talk more about her past because she wasn't sure if she could. "i think so. people have said that to me before and even though i wasn't sure if it was a good or bad thing at first...i figured it was a bit of both.." she explained, or at least tried to while shrugging her shoulders. her friends loved her and thought she was an awesome with a great soul. not a mean bone in her body and always up for something fun. "i've been told that i'm kind..a friendly person - which can be good and bad because i will talk to anyone. literally anyone." she scoffed, thinking of all the friends she had met on the streets of new york. mainly the homeless. most of them had no one and for a bit, mackenzie was in the same boat and if she could be honest with herself, there were times where she still felt that way. that she was a burden and intruding on the lives that she found herself in. especially her uncle. "i've heard that i was a caring individual and i think it stems from me devoting a lot of my time with helping others. humans and animals alike."as positive as she came off and how she appeared to be, there were some people out there who couldn't stand her. she asked questions. a lot. the kind of questions that seemed to continue on and on and didn't look like they were going to stop any time soon. it was something that she struggled with, ever since she was younger and it was a habit that wouldn't go away. "i also heard that i could be a little annoying..somewhat clingy and a people pleaser." she added. mackenzie loved to please people. it was part of her whole not wanting to be a burden. everyone in her life, she felt that they were doing a lot to have her around and she wanted to repay their acts of kindness with her own. she got good grades, she tried to do as many good deeds a day that she could just so that people would have something nice to say about her. the blonde was traumatized by her last days spent in pennsylvania. the rumors. the stares. the name-calling. it was all too much for her and she needed the approval of everyone around her. "my cross country coach says that i'm a team player but that i also need to sit back and take time for myself. to not try and stretch myself out too thin otherwise i will lose myself. if you ask me it's a bit dramatic but i don't know, maybe he has a point." "i don't know...a lot of people just say that i'm as normal as a teenage girl can be. i scream at the sight of one direction..the vamps and even 5 seconds of summer. i spend way too much time on the internet looking at tumblr or wasting hours upon hours on youtube looking at vloggers that i wish to meet. helping people out, rescuing whatever animals i find, even babysitting - i love doing it. not only those things but other things like fashion inspires me, make-up, tv shows, movies - i mean..i'm seventeen. i missed out on a lot growing up and it's been a year for me and i feel that i'm finally getting into it." mackenzie bites down on her lower lip, hoping that she made some kind of sense and that her ramble didn't fly off the cliff. she knew that there was more to her, that there were layers or her and she wasn't just black and white. she was a unique individual who even though loved technology loved reading just as much and if not more. her imagination was out of this world and living in a place like new york city opened her eyes and mind up even more. do you agree with what people say about you? mackenzie quirked a brow. well, that was a question and then some. did she agree with what people said about her. "umm, .." she mumbled, clearly torn between answers. "i would say...yes and no, i guess." kenzie lifted her shoulders up and down lightly. "i mean, on one hand what i think of myself..i guess it just depends on the type of person you are." what she thought about herself wouldn't necessarily be the same way someone else thought about her. everyone was entitled to their own opinion and she would accept it. of course she would try to change their mind but if she couldn't then..well, she honestly had no clue.well i still think you have a certain something, not really sure what that is but i bet your boyfriend/girlfriend knows or are you still on the market? she clasped her hands together, her foot swinging back and forth as she listened to the interviewer. "no. no, i have a boyfriend. his name is todd," she grinned sheepishly. sure, she knew for a fact that she had mentioned him before but she didn't care about saying it again. she loved saying it. she had a boyfriend. "he was my first..real friend here." the two of them had been dating for eight months. eight months that she wouldn't trade for the world. he was her first boyfriend and first chance at a real relationship and she was in heaven. "but yeah, we're great! he's great.."shit, time flies. my next appointment will be here in a few minutes. it was a pleasure to meet you! mackenzie felt a small weight lift off of her shoulder and the smile that she was infamously known for made an appearance once again. she pushed herself up, her hands lightly gripping the arms of the chair as she stood to her full height. a whopping five foot two. she was practically a midget. "it was really great to meet you too! thanks for seeing me," she nodding, waving her hand quickly before turning to leave. see, that wasn't so bad - she thought to herself as she walked down the hallway. now to go home and study for that test that she had been dreading since the beginning of the week. or maybe she would spend a few moments on youtube, jamming away to the latest one direction hit. |
